1. Former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh and Congress leader Virbhadra Singh passed away in the early hours of July 8, 2021, after battling a prolonged illness. He was 87. The veteran leader was a nine-time MLA, a five-time Member of Parliament and had served as the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh for six terms.
2. Haiti President Jovenel Moise was assassinated by gunmen in his home on July 7, 2021. His wife was also wounded in the attack, confirmed interim Prime Minister of Haiti, Claude Joseph. The police and military were in control of security in Haiti, which has a history of political upheaval and dictatorship.
3. ‘Tiangong’ Space station is the flagship construction of China National Space Administration. Recently, Chinese astronauts successfully performed the country’s first spacewalk in the station. Out of the three astronauts, who blasted off last month, two of them-Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo, worked for seven hours on the outside of the Tiangong station in the orbit around Earth. Earlier, the USA banned Chinese astronauts from using the International Space Station.
4. Mansukh Mandaviya has taken charge as India’s new Health Minister, replacing Dr Harsh Vardhan. He is among the seven ministers who got elevated to the Union Cabinet on July 7, 2021. Mansukh Mandaviya will take charge of the clubbed Ministry of Health and Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.
5. Kiren Rijiju on July 7, 2021 took charge as the new Law and Justice Minister in the first major cabinet reshuffle in PM Modi’s second government. The Minister assured that the ministry will always try to be transparent and approachable for the media so that it knows what the ministry is doing and how it is performing.
6. Jyotiraditya Scindia has been appointed as India’s new Civil Aviation Minister, following his father’s footsteps. His late father, Madhavrao Scindia had held the civil aviation portfolio under the PV Narasimha Rao-led central government between 1991 and 1993.
7. Former IAS Officer Ashwini Vaishnaw has taken charge as India’s new Railways Minister and IT Minister in the first major cabinet reshuffle of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet on July 8, 2021.
8. Apna Dal President Anupriya Patel took charge as Minister of State in the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry on July 7, 2021 as a part of the major cabinet reshuffle and expansion. She was earlier serving as the Minister of State in the Union Health Ministry from 2016 to 2019.
