1. India’s largest oil company Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is going to set up the country’s first green hydrogen plant at its Mathura Refinery to meet the growing demand for clean energy in the future. IOC President Shrikant Madhav Vaidya said the country’s largest petroleum company has drawn up a strategic growth plan aimed at foraying into petrochemicals, hydrogen and electric mobility over the next 10 years, as well as focusing on its core refining and fuel marketing businesses.
2. Indian women’s cricket team’s Test and ODI captain Mithali Raj has again become the world’s number one batsman in ODI cricket. She achieved this feat by overtaking Stephanie Taylor of West Indies. Just a few days ago, Caribbean women’s batsman Taylor had secured the first position in ODIs. But in the latest ICC rankings, Mithali Raj once again won the first rank in ODI cricket.
3. Former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was recently re-elected as the chairman of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Ethics Commission. He was re-elected to this post during the session of the IOC. South Korea’s 77-year-old politician and diplomat Ban Ki-moon has been in this post since 2017. He will remain in this position for another term of four years. Laura Chinchilla of Costa Rica, who joined the IOC as a member in 2019, will be the new member of the Ethics Commission.
4. Saudi Arabia has removed the requirement of male guardian for women attending Hajj on 18 July 2021. The government ministry has said that people can register themselves online for Haj this year, including women without a male guardian. The move to eliminate the need for a male guardian for women participating in Haj has been welcomed by women pilgrims. It is another follow-up to Saudi Arabia’s other efforts to expand women’s rights in the kingdom.
5. China recently is the first case of infection with the human monkey B virus (Monkey B virus) in China unfolded. Monkey B virus Alphaherpesvirus Enzootic, found in macaque monkeys, i.e. it is originally found in them and was first identified in the year 1932. In humans, this virus is also spread by bites, scratches or contact with saliva, feces and urine of infected monkeys.
6. Asian Development Bank has reduced India’s economic growth forecast for the current financial year from 11 percent to 10 percent. This downgrade has been done keeping in mind the adverse impact of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. For the fiscal year 2022-23, the estimate has been increased from 7 per cent to 5 per cent as by that time most of the population will be vaccinated and economic activities will return to normal.
7. India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has approved seven companies for the sale of auto fuels in the country. These new approvals come under the easier guidelines for the Authority for Marketing of Transport Fuels which was revised in the year 2019. Reliance Industries (RIL) has been approved under these criteria. The Assam Gas Company, a Government of Assam undertaking, has also got approval from the Ministry for retailing the fuel. Onsite Energy which was formed in the year 2020 has also got the right to sell automobile fuel.
8. Every year on July 20, ‘Moon Landing Day’ is organized globally. This day is celebrated in honor of the people and their achievements who first stepped on the moon in the year 1969. Significantly, the ‘Apollo-11’ space mission included Commander Neil Armstrong and module pilots – Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. ‘National Moon Day’ or ‘Moon Landing Day’ was declared in the year 1971 by the then US President Richard Nixon. After the success of this mission, NASA described this landing as ‘the biggest technical achievement’.
