1. The Union Government of Ladakh has approved several important projects on 22 July 2021. Under this, a Central University will be established in the Union Territory of Ladakh at a cost of 750 crores. This university will also act as a model for other educational institutions there. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said that after the existence of Ladakh as a Union Territory, it was found that there is no apex institution of higher education here. It was only after this that the central government had taken the decision to open a central university in Ladakh, which has now been approved.
2. National Broadcasting Day is celebrated in India on 23 July every year. On this day in the year 1927, the Indian Broadcasting Company started radio broadcasting from Bombay station. Radio broadcasting in India started in the 1920s. The first program was broadcast by Radio Club of Mumbai in 1923.
3. India’s young wrestlers Tanu and Priya became world champions in 43 kg weight category , winning the title by performing brilliantly in the Cadet World Championship. Tanu won the title in the 43 kg category without losing a single point in the late night match on 22 July. She defeated Valeria Mikisich of Belarus in the final.
4. China recently harvested its first crop of ‘Space Rice’, China sent rice seeds during the 23-day lunar journey under the ‘Chang E-5’ mission in November. After exposure to cosmic radiation and zero gravity, these seeds, weighing about 40 grams, are being researched at China’s ‘Space Breeding Research Center’. China has been carrying and researching seeds of rice and other crops into space since 1987.
5. International Monetary Fund said that the global growth rate for 2021 will be around 6 percent. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said that unless the pace of Covid-19 vaccination increases, the economic recovery will decrease. In the month of April, the IMF had predicted that the global growth rate for 2021 would reach 6 percent. Georgieva said the lack of access to vaccines in developing countries, as well as the rapid spread of the delta version of the Kovid-19 virus, threatens to slow the pace of economic recovery.
6. Russia has successfully test-fired its new S-500 air defense missile system on 20 July 2021 from the Southern Training Range, Kapustin Yar. The S-500 missile system is being developed by the Almaz-Antey Air Defense Concern. The S-500 is the world’s most advanced anti-missile system and is expected to have a range of 600km. This missile system is also capable of countering attacks from space.
7. The central government has increased the limit of foreign direct investment in pension fund management under the National Pension System (NPS) from 49 percent to 74 percent. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) Act adds to the FDI limit in the insurance sector. The National Pension System (NPS) was introduced for government employees in January 2004 and was later opened to all in 2009.
8. Union Cabinet has approved a production linked incentive scheme of Rs 6,322 crore for specialty steel. The move is aimed at boosting domestic exports and manufacturing from the region. An incentive of Rs 6,322 crore will be provided over five years and the scheme will create more than 5,25,000 jobs. This will boost manufacturing and help reduce imports.
