Last year, Southern Railway also had a hike in their gross earnings of more than six thousand crore rupees.
Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh Appointed as Regional Director WHO SOUTHEAST Asia —Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh appointed Regional Director for World Health Organization South-East Asia, for a second five-year term. Her second term of office will begin on 1 February 2019. She is the first woman to become Regional Director of WHO South-East Asia Region Previous year. Thailand became the first in Asia-Pacific to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis.
Kartik Sharma Won New South Wales Mens Amateur Golf Championship —Kartik Sharma won the New South Wales Men’s Amateur Golf Championship held in Australia by defeating Australia’s Nathan Barberie in the scheduled 36-hole final. He is playing for India as part of National Squad since the age of 10.
PM Inaugurated Kochi Refinery —PM Narendra Modi inaugurated an integrated refinery expansion complex of the public sector Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited at the Kochi Refinery, Kerala. Petrochemical complex, BPCL Kochi refinery is a Make in India initiative. It is aimed at reducing dependence on imports.
India to Participate in The Programme For International Student Assessment in 2021 —The Programme for International Student Assessment is a triennial international survey which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of a 15-year-old student. India would be participating in the PISA assessment in 2021.

Mohammed Shami: Fastest Indian to reach 100 ODI Wickets —Fast Bowler Mohammed Shami has become the fastest Indian to claim 100 wickets in One-day Internationals. Mohammed Shami achieved this feat in his 56th ODI game. Mohammed Shami’s wicket number 100 was New Zealand opener, Martin Guptill. Before Mohammed Shami, the record was held Irfan Pathan who had reached the 100-wicket mark in 59 ODIs. Other Indians in the list of fastest Indians to reach 100 ODI wickets are Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar and Javagal Srinath.
Awards Under Swasth Bharat Yatra —The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had launched Swasth Bharat Yatra to amplify its Eat Right India initiative. Swasth Bharat Yatra was a 100-day consumer outreach programme. The Yatra saw the participation of around 2.5 crore people across various States and UTs. It also led to the creation of 21,000 local ‘Eat Right Champions’ who would sustain this movement in the future.
Oscar-winning French Composer Michel Legrand Passes Away
Oscar-winning French composer Michel Legrand has passed away aged 86. During a career spanning more than half a century, Legrand won three Oscars. His first was in 1969 for the song ‘The Windmills of Your Mind’ from the film ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’.
