- Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab announced the resignation of his government on August 10, 2020 amid public outrage over the devastating explosion in Beirut, which caused massive destruction and led to the loss of many lives.
- India and Maldives signed a contract on August 10, 2020 for development of five eco-tourism zones in Addu atoll of the island nation. The eco-tourism zones are part of grant projects being implemented under the High-Impact Community Development project (HICDP) scheme that involves total grant assistance of USD 5.5 million to the Maldives.
- Russia is all set to launch the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine on August 12, 2020. The news of Russia registering its first vaccine against the virus was announced earlier on August 8 by Oleg Gridnev, Deputy Health Minister.
- The European Union has announced €1.65 million humanitarian aid to support those affected by severe flooding in South Asia, most notably India, Bangladesh and Nepal.
- International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples or World Tribal Day was observed on August 9, 2020. The day is aimed at promoting and protecting the rights of the world’s indigenous population.
- Renowned Urdu Poet and Lyricist Rahat Indori passed away on August 11, 2020. He was 70. He had tested positive for COVID-19.
- The government of Bangladesh has decided to construct a standalone war memorial for the Indian soldiers who were killed by Pakistan during the country’s struggle for Independence in 1971.
- Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM Academy) on August 11, 2020 in New Delhi, as part of the ongoing week-long behaviour change campaign Gandagi Mukt Bharat. The Swachh Bharat Mission Academy with its mobile-based technology will significantly boost the capacity building efforts in training of Swachhagrahis as well as community-based organizations and others associated with phase 2 of the mission.
