1. To manage hearing loss in newborn and young children, Punjab government launched an automated auditory brainstem response system (AABR) under universal newborn hearing screening programme. By doing so, Punjab has become the first state in the country to introduce the system.
2. Gujarat High Court became the first court in the country to formally start live streaming of proceedings. Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana announced that steps would soon be taken to replicate this to some extent in the Supreme Court as well.
3. The Bangladesh government is working to develop a social media platform named ‘Jogajog’ as an alternative to Facebook. The platform will help the local entrepreneurs to create their own marketplace for sharing information and data without depending on any foreign platform.
The government is also working to develop a communication app ‘Alapan’ as an alternative to WhatsApp.
4. Cisco Networking Academy and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) have partnered to address the shortage of a tech-proficient workforce in India and create career opportunities for millions in the digital economy.
5. India women’s forward Bala Devi has been named as the AIFF Women’s Footballer of the Year 2020-21, with young gun Manisha Kalyan winning the AIFF Women’s Emerging Footballer of the Year 2020-21 Award.
6. Mirabai Chanu won India’s first medal at Tokyo Olympics with silver in women’s 49kg weightlifting on the first official day of action at the Games.
7. NASA and the Canadian space agency are building a telescope named the Super pressure Balloon-borne Imaging Telescope or Super BIT. It is said to be the successor to the Hubble telescope.
As per recent media reports, a stadium-sized helium balloon is going to be used to lift up the telescope, which is to be sent to the upper levels of the earth’s atmosphere. It has been designed by the University of Toronto, Princeton University and Durham University in England together, in conjunction with NASA and the Canadian Space Agency.
8. A pair of rare Chrysilla volupe spiders was recently spotted at Puttenahalli Lake in Kerala. The Chrysilla volupe was believed to be extinct for 150 years, until it was discovered at the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (WWS) in 2018. The spider belongs to the family of jumping spiders (Salticidae). Male spiders are 5.44 mm long including stretched legs and 1.76 mm wide. They have a upper skin in reddish orange colour with two shining blue stripes. Females measure 2.61 mm long and 0.88 mm wide, and have a greyish upper skin with grey eyebrows with yellow legs.
